Contraception without daily worries: implant or IUD?

Contraceptive implant

Looking for reliable contraception you don’t have to remember every day? Today there are long-acting, reversible options that let you fit family planning around your lifestyle.

Contraceptive implant

A small, flexible rod that a doctor places under the skin of the upper arm.

  • Contains a hormone that prevents pregnancy.
  • Provides long-lasting protection.
  • No need to remember a pill every day.
  • Fertility usually returns quickly after the implant is removed.

Intrauterine device (IUD)

A small device that a gynaecologist places in the uterus. There are two main options:

  • Hormonal IUD — releases a small amount of hormone and often reduces menstrual bleeding.
  • Copper IUD — contains no hormones and provides long-lasting contraception.

How effective are these methods?

The implant, the hormonal IUD and the copper IUD are all more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. However, none of them protects against sexually transmitted infections.

The most suitable method can differ from woman to woman. During a gynaecologist consultation we can assess your health, your wishes and your future family plans.

At Vecmāte you can get advice on choosing contraception, including the contraceptive implant.
