Taping in pregnancy: how it works and when it really helps

Kinesiology taping for a pregnant woman at the Vecmāte centre

Back pain? Leg swelling? Headaches? During pregnancy most painkillers are off-limits — but you don’t have to keep suffering either. Kinesiology taping is a safe and proven alternative, also used in Riga’s maternity hospitals.

What is kinesiology tape?

The tape is an elastic, self-adhesive strip, similar to a plaster, which the specialist applies to the skin using a specific technique. It gently lifts the skin, improves lymph flow and circulation, takes the load off muscles and joints — and keeps working for several days after it is applied.

When does taping help in pregnancy?

The most common situations where taping brings immediate relief:

  • back and lower back pain as your bump grows heavier;
  • bump support — eases the "pulling" sensation and takes the strain off the ligaments;
  • leg swelling and a feeling of heaviness;
  • pelvic and hip pain, especially in the third trimester.

The effect is usually felt straight away. Our patients’ experience: after taping at 35–38 weeks of pregnancy, back and lower abdominal pain went away almost immediately.

Is it safe?

Yes — if it is done by a certified healthcare professional after an assessment. The tape contains no medication and does not affect the baby, so it can be used safely throughout pregnancy.

Always: at the "Vecmāte" centre we check uterine tone with medical equipment before every taping — only then is the procedure truly safe.

The price is €35 per body area, including a medical assessment. Taping is easy to combine with a massage in one visit.
